SALT LAKE CITY, January 11, 2017– The seventh annual Outdoor Inspiration Awards, presented by adidas Outdoor, recognized the 2017 winners at a special event January 11, at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market. The Outdoor Inspiration Awards celebrates those that inspire others to participate in and support outdoor activities and the outdoor industry.
“It is a privilege to share the stage with the winners of this year’s Inspiration Awards,” said Greg Thomsen, managing director, adidas Outdoor U.S. “Each one of them represents the heart and soul of this great industry and has shared their passion with many. We are very fortunate they are part of this community, playing a key role in shaping the future of the outdoors. Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists. We applaud you for your commitment to inspiring others in supporting both the outdoor industry and the natural world. For the Lifetime Achievement Award, there could not be a better choice than Kris Tompkins. Her work has impacted so many people on a global scale, she is a true inspiration, and a role model to all of us.”
This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by adidas Outdoor, recognized Kris Tompkins, an American conservationist and former CEO of Patagonia, Inc. At age 15, Tompkins befriended rock climbing legend and equipment manufacturer, Yvon Chouinard; he gave her a summer job working for Chouinard Equipment. After finishing school at the College of Idaho in Caldwell, where she ski-raced competitively, she started to work full-time for what later became Patagonia, Inc.
During her tenure, Patagonia started to donate 10 percent of its profits or one percent of sales – whichever was greater - to environmental organizations such as Earth First! and Friends of the Ventura River and other companies followed suit. Tompkins and her late husband, businessman and conservationist Douglas Tompkins, worked together to create large wilderness conservation areas in Chile and Argentina. She continues those strong efforts in South America today.
“I want to extend congratulations to all the finalist and the winners of the 2017 Outdoor Inspiration Awards, presented by adidas Outdoor” said Marisa Nicholson, vice president and Outdoor Retailer show director. “This celebration highlights the commitment and dedication this community has for sharing outdoor adventures with others. We are honored to celebrate all those who were nominated, the finalist and the winners. They are not only inspirational, but also, provide us all with a renewed passion.”
Nominations, submitted through Outdoor Retailer hosted websites, were selected based on inspiration criteria for individuals and groups – impact, creativity, service, technology, innovation, philanthropy, engagement, longevity, sustainability, activities and awareness.
