Meet the Winter Market 2012 Competitors:

 

Julie Mangelsdorf

Julia


Julia Mangelsdorf is a senior finishing up her degree in Apparel Design & Production at Kansas State University.  Julia's interest in design initially began with an introductory sewing class when she was 12 years old.  Since then her interest developed into a passion that eventually lead her to the Apparel Design program at K-State.  While at K-State Julia has grown exponentially as a designer as a result of stimulating classes, diverse learning experiences and professors that have challenged and pushed her.  One of Julia's greatest strengths as a designer is her strong sense of aesthetic relationships, and has worked as a teaching assistant in an aesthetics course at K-State.  Julia has participated in several design competitions including K-State's own version of a Project Runway competition.

Kelsee Morefield

Kelsee


Kelsee Morefield is a senior in the Clothing, Textiles, and Design program at the University of Idaho. Her most recent design accomplishment is working with a product development team of students to prototype uniforms for the local roller derby association, the Rolling Hills Derby Dames. Kelsee serves as a CALS Ambassador, recruiting for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and is a Peer Mentor for new students. She is active in the student chapter of the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA), with her garments were featured in the ITAA Mom’s Week-end Fashion Show. Kelsee is currently employed at Vanity, where visual merchandising is a part of her retail responsibilities. Kelsee hails from Burns, Oregon.

Lauren Mellor

Lauren


Lauren grew up in the small farming town of Colfax, Washington.  At Auburn University she was able to pursue both her love for design and athletics.  For the last four years Lauren has studied Apparel Design and Production Management, with a focus on design, while maintaining a 3.6 GPA as a scholarship athlete. While at Auburn she was able to expand and refine her skills while designing for many different markets such as bridal, sportswear and children’s wear.  In the summer of 2011 she completed an internship at Stephanie D. Couture in Portland, Oregon.  Lauren has a strong interest in design work from conceptual design through technical design execution.  Her background includes using Illustrator, Photoshop, Gerber and Lectra software.  Her skills include construction, patternmaking, and the use of value added techniques in designing athletic wear, children’s wear, and bridal.

Jennifer Hirsch

Jennifer Hirsch


Currently studying Fashion Design at the Savannah Collage of Art and Design, Jenn is a designer who lives and breaths the outdoor industry and lifestyle.  She enjoys skiing, surfing, diving, kayaking, biking, hiking, rock climbing and fabricating original creations.  Her interests in art, dress, and the outdoors all started at a very young age.  Jenn grew up in Albuquerque where she was the beneficiary of the distinctive combination of exposure to art at every turn and the endless outdoor activities that the southwest has to offer.  Jenn originally attended collage in Denver where she became deeply involved in the actions sports industry as a freeskier.  She traveled around the world both for school and to compete in ski events.  Jenn hopes to continue the cohesion of her passions by starting a surf riders club at SCAD and woking within the Acton Sports and Outdoor industry upon graduating. 



Margaret Mussman

Margaret


As a child in Idaho, Margaret Mussman was raised playing outside.  Before studying Fashion Design and Product Development at the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP, Margaret pursued a career in snowboarding.  This adventure ended with a life threatening injury that set Margaret on a new track.  Upon recovering, she moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington, bought a sailboat, and taught herself how sew for sailors all the while sailing the Puget Sound.  She apprenticed for a summer under a marine seamstress, but there wasn’t enough creativity to satisfy her.  She found herself exploring apparel construction when she wasn’t’ working.  Margaret has worked as an intern in New York, Wisconsin, and Cincinnati gaining experience in outerwear, couture, and media marketing.  Outdoor apparel is confidently Margaret’s focus, and she looks forward to a future in the outerwear industry.



Paula Lam

Paula


Paula is a senior at San Francisco State University in the Apparel Design and Merchandising program. Her fascination with how garments are constructed and her innate nature to make improvements in current design aesthetics are what drew her into the field of fashion. Growing up in San Jose, California where the high-tech industry is based, Paula became inspired to incorporate new technologies and innovation into her design process. She loves to combine unexpected materials for both aesthetics and function—a signature of her work. Her designs have been showcased in several fashion shows at SFSU and she is currently developing a coat collection for Fall/Winter '11 in which she is exploring structural silhouettes inspired by modern architecture.
