Outdoor Retailer lost a friend Wednesday night when a fire destroyed the home of the former DV8 nightclub. A scene for many industry parties and gatherings over the years, Club DV8 was a fixture of the show.
The building was located on West Temple, just across the street from the Salt Palace Convention Center and next to the Marriott hotel.
Witnesses reported that flickering light could be seen on the first floor of the building at around 9 p.m. A short time later, huge flames shot into the sky, visible for several miles.
The blaze pushed dark smoke and flames high into the air for about 90 minutes as show attendees gawked at the destruction.
Seventy firefighters from Salt Lake City and the Unified Fire Authority used 11 engines and four ladder trucks to contain the fire around 10:30 p.m.
No one was believed to be inside the building, and no injuries were reported. People in nearby businesses were evacuated, but were allowed to return later.
The fire caused the building's roof to collapse and ravaged the inside, creating a safety issue. Authorities demolished the building yesterday.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Authorities said it was the city's largest in almost five years, and caused about $1 million in damage.
