About Events & Seminars
Check out the Events and Seminars Schedule to see all of the events taking place at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2008. Highlights of a few of them are below.
INDUSTRY PARTY
Friday, August 8, 06:00 p.m. - 08:30 p.m. - Energy Solutions Arena - Outside Plaza
We at Outdoor Retailer are thrilled that Redwood Creek Wines of California will be presenting Rusted Root at the OR Industry Party this year. The synergy of a band like Rusted Root with the community of outdoor professionals attending the show is perfect and a not-to-miss experience for all. Typically our industry party is a great gathering focused on food and refreshments and networking for the retailers, members of the media and the brands in the market. Having entertainment like this will energize the party to a higher level, and be something to talk about for years to come.
We don't want to forget to extend our thanks to the party co-sponsors, Life Is Good and Cocona. And we would be doing them a disservice if we neglected to call out Redwood Creek's advocacy program to recognize outdoor programs at work, called the 'Greater Outdoors Project.' It's a $50,000 grant that will benefit a deserving outdoor advocacy non-profit that is getting more people onto the trails and waterways of our wild lands. The winning organization will be announced at the Industry Party, just before Rusted Root take the stage. This is a great example of uniting artistry, commerce and advocacy to create a trifecta to benefit all!
PROJECT OR - A Student Design Competition at Summer Market 2008
This competition will highlight the design strength of the outdoor industry, and calls attention to the importance of innovative new fabrication technologies to the market. The contestants, students selected from top design schools, will compete for an all-expenses-paid trip to Outdoor Retailer Winter Market '09 and a profile in Textile Intelligence. Participating students will be announced in mid-June 2008.
The contestants will be students selected from the nation's top design schools, including Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), Los Angeles, Calif.; Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), New York, N.Y.; North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C.; and Washington State University, Pullman, Wash. Each school is responsible for choosing one Project OR student to represent their school, based on Project OR criteria.
On the first day of the show, each contestant will be provided a work station space in the Design Center at the Energy Solutions Arena (formerly the Delta Center) to design and construct their prototype design. Students are required to use components available at the show from over 100 supplier exhibitors that will provide the contestants with all fabrics and materials. Each work station will be equipped with sewing machines, cutting tables, pressing equipment, and tools, etc. Contestants will have a 48-hour time limit to conceive, design and build their prototypes. The final designs will be unveiled in The Design Center on Sunday, August 10. This area of the show will also feature innovative new exhibits and products new to the market.
Show attendees will be able to view the progress of students' work in designated areas throughout the show. The competition will be judged by a panel of designers and industry influencers from across the industry chosen by Outdoor Retailer, combined with a live voting component at the show. The judges will review each design based on originality, innovative use of performance and eco-friendly materials, and the overall practical application for the outdoor market. The winner will be announced Sunday, August 10 at 3 p.m. in the Source and Design Center and featured in Textile Intelligence in the fall.
CONTESTANT/STUDENT BIOS:
Station #1
Aimee Morrow Colorado State University
I began my training and education in Apparel Design at Radford University in Virginia in 2002. Two years later I moved to Colorado to take a break and have a little fun on the slopes, snowboarding and hiking, and the rivers, rafting. In 2006, I continued on my Apparel Design path to Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. I was selected through portfolio process into the Apparel Design & Production program and will be graduating in May, 2009 from the Department of Design & Merchandising. My experience as a designer has been diverse. My portfolio consists of business suits, swimwear, 70s inspired disco garb, and yoga wear, to name a few. I enjoy designing all types of apparel: men's, women's and even children's, and experimenting with graphics as well. My passion lies in warm weather apparel for active and resort wear. My style might be defined as designing for the ultra feminine high fashion woman who delights in a casual and chic outdoor lifestyle.
Station #2
Allison Stelyn FIDM
Design is my means for creative problem solving. Whether it's designing and constructing a go-cart out of a handtruck dolly and skateboard or filling my notebooks with sketches during the long silences of travel, design has always been my forte.
Growing up in beautiful Southern California with the mountains at my doorstep and the beach down the street has given me a true admiration for nature and the environment. My goal is to develop clothing that is functional, practical, aesthetically pleasing, and conducive to an active lifestyle. I strongly believe in diversifying the product mix to include eco-friendly alternatives.
My education greatly influenced my decision to become a designer. I attended an independent elementary school where I was introduced to a multitude of artistic mediums. In high school, I took part in The Multimedia Arts and Design Academy where I learned a great deal about graphic design. I pursued graphic design until I realized there was no conceivable way I could spend the rest of my life indoors sitting at a computer, so I enrolled in fashion school.
I graduated with a degree in Apparel Manufacturing as well as International Manufacturing and Product Development (IMPD) from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Los Angeles. The IMPD program allowed me to work directly with an industry sponsor to build a line from conception to completion. The IMPD program also afforded me the opportunity to partake in trend and textile research in Paris and Milan and view production facilities in Hong Kong.
Design is in everything. It's everywhere. I simply take elements of what I see around me and bring it to life as fashion.
Station #3
Ryanniel Ocampo FIT NY
Ryanniel Ocampo, 20, was born in Athens, Greece and was raised by his creative family. He considers New York and Philippines as his hometowns. He was first introduced in the arts by his interest in dancing. Through dance he developed his keen sense in fashion and started designing theatrical costumes. Certain and positive he pursued his career in fashion in New York City. He is now on his last year at Fashion Institute of Technology and loving every bits and pieces of what he is learning. He’s mostly inspired by industrial design and is a big fan of Belgian and Scandinavian designers. Ryan is a hard worker and put his heart on whatever he does. What sets him apart from the other designers is his personal aesthetic as he describes as: “smart and innovative”.
Station #4
Casey Stannard Washington State University
I grew up in the sleepy college town of Moscow, ID which is smack dab in the middle of a wheat field. Two younger brothers, two spoiled dogs, and my parents make up the rest of the Stannard clan. After graduating from Moscow High, I decided to cross the state line a whopping eight miles to attend Washington State University. WSU, surprisingly, is also in the middle of a wheat field, but we do have a great basketball team. Originally, I decided to major in architecture but I soon found that it didn’t hold my interest, so I switched to Apparel design. In the AMT program, I was able to put my prior love of sewing and design to use without having to draw I-beams or cross-sections. I showcased two collections in the International Textile and Apparel Association Mom’s Weekend Fashion Shows. I have also been able to travel to Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, and now Salt Lake City. I will be graduating a semester early in December 2008. My hobbies are: sewing, drawing, walking outdoors, bike riding, reading, and traveling. My awards include: 2006 AMDT Freshman of the Year, 2006 FIDM Future Fashion Designer (finalist), Cougar Freshman Achievement Award 2005-present, Selma A. Streight Scholarship, Home Economics Scholarship, 2007 AMDT Junior or the Year, President’s Honor Roll 2005-present.
Station #5
Kristen Jones North Carolina State University
Kristen Jones was born in Raleigh, NC, and is currently a senior at NC State University. Hoping to attend design school, she participated in a summer program at NC State’s College of Textiles and quickly knew that it was the place for her. She is majoring in Textile and Apparel Management with a concentration in Fashion Development and Product Management. Kristen has studied merchandising and marketing, as well as creative and technical design. She completed her senior collection during the Spring 2008 semester. Her six piece, women’s ready-to-wear collection won her the first place prize at the Senior Collection Fashion Show. Kristen is currently doing free lance design work and plans to graduate in December.
